The Recycling Ministry of Gospel Tracts International
Jesus multiplied the loaves and the fishes and fed more than 5,000 hungry people. When they had finished eating he commanded His disciples: “Gather up the leftover fragments so that nothing will be lost.” (John 6.12)
This incident seems somehow to be absolutely typical of Jesus: No waste, no carelessness; no overlooking anything which might be of value. After all, Jesus defined His entire ministry to this world in terms of reclamation and recycling: “For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.” (Luke 19.10)
From its inception, the work of Gospel Tracts International has been carried out on the principle of John 6.12. We manage to print and distribute about 2 million tracts every year on an annual budget of approximately $100,000. That averages out to about 5 cents per tract to print it and ship it to the mission field. Other literature ministries average spending more than 50 times as much for each piece delivered to the field!
How have we been able to carry on our work at a fraction of the cost incurred by others in doing the same type of effort? The answer is by gathering the fragments!
For many years all our tracts were printed on scrap paper salvaged from an industrial forms printing plant in the area. We continue to scour freight salvage houses and discount stores looking for bargains on paper and supplies. All of our tracts are folded by volunteers. Our binding, trimming, counting, packaging, shipping and much of the printing is handled the same way. Our ministry would simply not be possible withhout the tens of thousands of hours salvaged from busy lives every year by our volunteer partners in this work. Christians from congregations throughout Northwest Arkansas and Southwest Missouri donate their time and effort to the work. Many pick up unfolded tracts and take them to thier homes to fold and staple. Others come for our weekly working, held every Thursday morning at the Baldwin church building to lend a hand to the effort.
We collect and repair used Bibles, books, hymnals and Bible class literature for shipment to mission congregations and national evangelists. We also gather Bible study books, gospel periodicals and lesson material which we assemble into kits to be sent to preacher students overseas. Among the items which we can always use: Bibles, song books, communion ware, film projectors, small cassette players, religious books.
By recycling and reusing what can be saved, we have been able to bless literally hundreds of congregations and thousands of Christians all over the world with the leftover fragments of America’s abundant blessings.
